I Have Thoughts

I have thoughts. And I need to get them out of my head.

I normally post my thoughts on Facebook. That helps. But sometimes I feel they’re worth more than a few hours of exposure on some friends’ feeds. And sometimes I want to get deeper than is practical on a social media post. I need another outlet.

I’m going to try Medium as my new outlet. I would love it if my thoughts got out of my head and into your head.

Why would you want to read the thoughts of a 59 year old, college-educated, cis white American guy, married almost 40 years to a similarly-aged cis white American woman? What could I possibly offer that hasn’t been written by guys like me a thousand times?

I’ve lead a unique life that some have said is worth writing about.

I was raised Catholic, got into New Age in my teens, became a Christian at 23 and fell down a rabbit hole of right wing evangelicalism until I was a member of a militia-affiliated unregistered Baptist church. Now I’m a liberal atheist. Heck of a path, that.

My degree is in electrical and computer engineering. I quit after 6 years and got into sales, having to overcome massive introversion. I became a Vice President of marketing for a national health products company, then left to become a freelance ecommerce and website developer. I started and sold a magazine, became a public speaker, and I’ve survived in self-employment for almost 20 years. All with ADHD and dealing with depression.

I grew up in Long Island, New York. Attended college in Upstate New York. Moved to Lubbock, Texas. Moved to Indiana for 25 years, moved to the tiny island of Kauai, Hawaii, for 9 years, and now live north of Charlotte in North Carolina.

I used to be an anti-vaccine, anti-GMO, anti-nuclear conspiracy theorist. Now I defend science. Soon I’ll write an article about how one man said the phrase “intellectual honesty” to me, which set me off into extensive introspection and a new world view.

I was a Republican for over 20 years. I voted for Reagan, Bush, Bush, Dole, Bush, and Bush again. Then life experience, real world data, and the writings of Barack Obama moved me to create Indiana Republicans for Obama in 2008, with me taking three months off to volunteer for the Obama campaign. Now I’m considered far left. There is a lot to write about how that happened.

So give me a chance to entertain and inform you. Subscribe to get notified of what I write next. Or don’t. I’ll still get these thoughts out of my damned head.
